"red", in "shorts" - pros'n cons....

Lets have a chat on gear, filmJeppe pondered, having turned over the "Red one"-hype with HP/director at "Aarhus Filmworkshop;

So we asked Lasse, former student of "The school of film and tv-produktion" at Odder Højskole, now freelance-cameraman, who has used "Red one" on a music-video to write 3 lines on the cam./workflow and 3 lines comment on the Aarhus Filmworkshop-decission not to enter into the red world, just now.

Well,comes a bit more than 6 lines...Lasse obviously hasn't considered the money-side of the exercise.
And I/film,Jeppe certainly believe that "normal" HD should be less complecated to control/workflow wellknovn for halfbaked filmmakers...gear is facinating, but story is all, mind You geeks.

Here comes Lasse:
Quite easy workflow after a few hours of practise. The RAW Format makes it quite a bit better to work with regarding colorgrading and keying(bluescreen/greenscreen) Almost same quality when recording in 4k as real film + the option of shooting with 120fps for very good slowmotion wich you cannot get with many other cameras. Very easy to rig the camera the way you want it, unlike most other cameras. Both regarding sound, battery, HDD (or what media you decide to record to. Direct to harddisk is preferred for easy access) and any other type of equipment to mount directly on the camera. My experience with the camera is that it is very easy to work with. The menu system is very logic and tells you exactly the information you need all the time. It is very easy to handle though I must admit that it is a bit on the heavy side when everything is rigged. Then again so is other similar cameras like the big HD Cam "Århus Filmværksted" already has. The sharpness and crispness of the pictures are equal to none that I have seen so far, and the workflow when offloading to pc/mac (and yes it works with both.. RED even supplies a program that can convert the RAW files to any format you wish....for free) is one of the easiest I've worked with so far. Of course filming in 4k (12megapixel) takes up a "little" more space than HD (but then again the quality is roughly 5x as good as HD) but with the supplied software you can play back easily on a good editing computer. Well that was a bit more than 3 lines + 3 lines.. but I hope you survive...I'd go RED any day, and well for people "Århus Filmværksted" would lend their current HD Cam to, RED would most definitely be a MUCH better choice, since they already have to know what's back and front of a prof camera.
